Those who fancy Christmas with a real twist can enjoy a special festival in Naples.

Italy's famous port city in the shadows of Mt Vesuvius is offering a wide range of activities and events in an all-encompassing event lasting through December and January.

Visitors will be able to enjoy music, theatre, cinema, art, literature and much more as the city turns the festive season into a rich cultural experience.

The themes mix together through the involvement of historic churches and displays of how Christmas has influenced art, Whatsonwhen describes.

In addition to the fun and festivities, those enjoying the warmer southern European weather away from the cold British winter can enjoy a range of fascinating sights.

Not the least of these is Pompeii, remarkably preserved for nearly 2,000 years since Vesuvius buried the Roman city under ash and lava in the year 79.
