2008 News Archive - Holidays - New arts centre opens in Tenerife

12 11 2008

A new contemporary art centre, the Tenerife Espacio de las Artes (TEA), has welcomed its first visitors.

Celebrated Swiss architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron, who designed Beijing's 'Birds Nest' stadium, have teamed up with the Spaniard Virgilio Gutierrez to design the TEA, which hopes to become a leading example of contemporary architecture.

Tenerife is justifiably famous as a beach holiday destination and the island is now hoping that the TEA, located in the old quarter of Santa Cruz, will give it added cultural clout.

The TEA will display the works of Tenerife's most famous artistic offspring, Oscar Dominguez, who was a respected member of the surrealist movement in the 30s.

It will also display the work of international artists and contain a dedicated photography centre.

According to the Telegraph, the northern side of Tenerife, where Santa Cruz is situated, is the more "authentically Spanish" side of the island.

With this new art gallery culture vultures may find themselves flocking to discover this popular island getaway.
