Those looking to spend New Year somewhere exotic and special could do far worse than Rome, where the Italian party spirit and the history of a great city collide in a spectacular occasion.
Anyone wanting to know where the best party of all in town is should look no further than the Piazza del Popolo, where, in line with tradition, there is a smorgasbord of entertainment with both classical and rock music.
If that wasn't enough, the crowds are then treated to a huge firework display when the clock strikes midnight, with the following day (for those who can manage to crawl out of bed) bringing a large display of clowns, acrobats and other performers for the children.
Visitors to Rome will not just be able to enjoy the special occasion but also enjoy the various historical wonders of the city.
These vary from the ruins of the Coliseum and the Spanish Steps to the ornate and fascinating Vatican, while the cafe culture and cuisine for which Italy is famous is all around.
