Portugal's reputation as one of the world's very best golf destinations is hardly a secret and tourism officials claim that conditions will only improve in the years ahead.
According to ITP-Tourismo de Portugal, the golf industry will experience growth of 21 per cent within the next few years, largely as a result of a €50 million investment in promoting the sport in the country.
There are more than 70 quality golf courses in Portugal and golf enthusiasts from around the world flock to the country year after year to hone their swing and sample some of Europe's most difficult but rewarding holes.
Golfers Today, the popular British publication, named Portugal the best golf destination in the world in 2006 and it is easy to see why.
Astonishingly, Portugal boasts 14 of Europe's top-rated golf courses, all of which blend playability, scenery, facilities and atmosphere to perfection. With 300 days of sunshine each year, Portugal is always going to be popular with Brits tired of moping round their local course in the wind and rain and 2007 will be no exception.
The country's reputation for golf will only be enhanced by the new Portugal Masters event, which will be held in October at Victoria Clube de Golfe in Vilamoura. Prize money for the event will be €3 million and the world's best golfers are expected to attend.
Portugal's tourism officials are seducing potential visitors with tales of "dramatic red sea cliffs, bright blue seas, or, perhaps, a grove of mature pine trees". Those who have enjoyed a round or two in Portugal before will know, however, that the sheer enjoyment of tackling the country's spectacular courses can hardly be captured in words.
The Algarve, in particular, is strewn with dozens of exceptional golf courses, many of which are just a golf ball's throw away from the beautiful Atlantic beaches.
