2008 News Archive - Holidays - See a winter wonderland in Beijing

21 06 2007

Wondering where to go on holidays this winter? You could do a lot worse than Beijing's Longquing Gorge.

In January this already beautiful gorge is turned into a veritable winter paradise of ice and light.

A massive fireworks display is put on and blocks of ice are carved into a wonderful menagerie of animals, including swans, tigers and dragons.

Visitors will also be entranced by the ice lanterns, whose mysterious glowing light is reflected around the entire gorge.

This is a popular event in Beijing and hundreds of families come from far and wide to attend, usually packing a picnic and making a day of it.

Beijing itself is full of sites that should not be missed, including the world-famous Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City, the old abode of the emperors of China.

Formerly known as Peking, the Chinese capital is one of the oldest cities in the world.
