2008 News Archive - Holidays - Spain top for online bookers

22 01 2007

Spain has come out on top in a poll of UK internet users booking a destination abroad for their main 2007 holiday.

The Mediterranean hotspot ranked highest among foreign travel locations, beating strong competition from the USA and France, Easier reports.

The study, conducted by Continental Research, also predicts a boom in short breaks away next year, with greater numbers of people saying they're thinking about a weekend away in the sun.

"Clearly the UK's hit and miss weather drives many holiday makers abroad," Colin Shaddick, director of Continental Research, told easier.com.

Top of the reasons for heading abroad were the sunshine and being able to relax on a beach, two areas which strongly contribute to Spain's dominance of this market.

The country is blessed with its position at the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea, with a long succession of beautiful coastal resorts which stretch from its border with Portugal, past Barcelona and up to France.

In particular, the Costa Calida in the south-east of the country offers a varied coastline. Miles of sandy beaches, private coves and dramatic cliffs all feature in this area of Murcia - all washed by the clear blue of the Mediterranean.
