Visitors to the Croatian city of Spilt can get into party mode as the city celebrates its winter carnival towards the end of the season.
Held every year in the last days before Lent, the carnival marks the end of the dark, gloomy season and the run up to Easter with a big party, marked by a huge amount of fancy dress.
Visitors looking to join in should therefore think about getting a fancy costume before they arrive, or alternatively watch and enjoy as the music plays and the streets are merry amid the mass of dressed up participants.
In the meantime, the historic city of Split offers a series of attractions ranging from its many Roman ruins to the superb scenic setting, sandwiched between the Adriatic Sea and the Dinaric Mountains.
The city centre is a United Nations world heritage site.
