2008 News Archive - Holidays - Spring festivals in the Maldives

07 04 2008

A series of festivals are set to take place this spring in the popular holidays destination of the Maldives.

The Prophet's Birthday is one such religious event taking place in the Maldives in May. People pray at the mosques early in the morning before enjoying feasts in households over a three-day public holiday period.

National Day also takes place in spring and is celebrated in April. The Maldives was under Portuguese colonial rule until Muhmmad Thakurufaanu liberated the region in 1573.

Thakurufaanu arrived in Male to end colonial rule and this is celebrated as National Day each spring.

Holidaymakers can expect parades and marches in the streets of Male and other islands.

Festivals in the Maldives are celebrated with "pomp and gaiety" according to the region's tourism website.
