Those who love elephants and fancy seeing them a bit more close up than they can in a zoo will be able to fulfil this aim many times over in Sri Lanka.

Apart from the regular use of the giant creatures as working animals, those taking a trip inland to the lush hill country near Kandy will be rewarded immensely by paying a visit to the remarkable and famous Pinnewala Elephant Orphanage.

This fascinating centre has dozens of elephants which are raised to adulthood by a team of dedicated employees, with a highlight of the day being bath time in the nearby river as beasts large and small splash around in the water.

During this time it is possible to have one's picture taken with a baby elephant for a few rupees.

Visitors will also be able to buy some interesting souvenirs - such as notebooks made out of recycled elephant dung.
