05 01 2009
Virginia, one of the oldest states in the US, is celebrating the birthday of one of its best-known institutions this year as it marks the 40th anniversary of offering holidays aimed specifically at romance-seeking couples.
The state has long enjoyed a reputation as a hotspot for honeymooning couples and 40 years ago this year it decided to advertise the fact by adopting the tourism slogan "Virginia is for Lovers".
Virginia may have taken its name from the unmarried Virgin Queen, Elizabeth I, but over the past 40 years of using the slogan, it has developed into one of the most popular holiday destinations for newlywed couples.
The state's tourism board has compiled a list of 40 romantic suggestions in honour of the special anniversary and is inviting tourists to "find out why Virginia brings out the passion in travellers".
According to PilotOnline.com, the 40-year-old slogan is one of the most recognisable in the US.
