2008 News Archive - Holidays - Vogalonga hits Venice

22 05 2007

Since being started in 1975 by some enthusiastic rowers, the Vogalonga has become of Venice's largest events.

Competitors from all over the world flock to this competition, which usually sees thousands of spectators turn out to watch the fun.

Taking place on May 27th in St Mark's Basin, the race sees boats battle each other over a gruelling 18-mile course.

The final stretch down the Grand Canal is a site not to be missed. This race is not for the faint-hearted, as competitors usually train intensely for months in advance.

Visitors to Venice will not want to miss the Piazza San Marco or the majestic Campo San Polo.

Or if palaces are your cup of tea, definitely be sure to take in the Doge's Palace and the Palazzo Grassi.

And the beautiful villas that surround Venice are also worth visiting, with their graceful architecture and lush gardens they will gratify even the most jaded visitor.

Of course no visit to Venice would be complete without a romantic gondola trip through its canals.
