10 02 2009

A new website has been launched which aims to help green-fingered tourists by providing them with a guide to the gardens of Virginia and the surrounding area.

The website, mycapitalgardensusa.co.uk, has been developed by Capital Region USA, a tourism company which aims to promote the attractions of Washington DC, Virginia and neighbouring Maryland.

Featuring the best botanical gardens, national parks, farmer's markets and wineries in the region, the web guide may make it easier for tourists to explore the romantic delights on offer in Virginia.

Monty Don, one of the UK's best-loved TV gardeners, said: "There is a wide range of spectacular gardens to visit in Virginia, Maryland and Washington DC.

"Many are loaded with history, as well as being exciting examples of the most modern ideas about contemporary garden design."

Thomas Jefferson, one of the best-known US presidents, built an impressive ornamental garden in Monticello, Virginia.

As one of the first areas of America to be colonised, Virginia was also the home state of seven other presidents.
