Olhao : Holiday Accommodation
Olhao is widely recognised as the largest and most important fishing port in the region and has bags of local character. One of the most popular parts of town is the long promenade which stretches along the waterfront and will lead you past pretty gardens to the fantastic fish and food markets at one end. Of course where there is a fish market then close by will be eating places with the catch of the day being prepared outside on charcoal grills, perfect washed down with a local beer. As an alternative to grilled fish, perhaps try the local dish Cataplana, a tasty combination of clams and pork with a generous helping of garlic usually all cooked together in a unique copper dish or pot. It is definitely the place to be if you enjoy fresh sea food. Olhao loves fish so much, it even has a festival in the summer dedicated to seafood. For an enjoyable day out, you can catch a boat out to one of the small islands sitting in the Ria Formosa Lagoon system, here you will find lovely sandy beaches and a small selection of snack bars.
