Spain is a popular holiday destination for all kinds of travellers - and with good reason. It's home to some of Europe's most vibrant cities, charming villages, stunning stretches of coastline and other areas of outstanding natural beauty. Of course, for British holidaymakers another advantage is its proximity to the UK, with the majority of flights to Spain taking less than three hours.
Whether you're looking for a city break, a holiday by the beach or a cultural getaway, Spain can certainly deliver. Its vast array of attractions, not to mention the numerous opportunities to get active, make it a country that's suited to everyone from families and couples to groups of friends and solo travellers.
Where to go in Spain
Choosing where to go on holiday in Spain can be tricky, so here are a few of the destinations you may want to consider exploring on the mainland.
Costa Blanca - The Costa Blanca is a glorious stretch of coastline along the Mediterranean in the province of Alicante. It's one of Spain's most popular holiday destinations, boasting beautiful cities such as Alicante, exciting resorts like Benidorm and plenty of wonderful beaches. Benidorm's Levante Beach is one of the best, but certainly not the only sandy stretch worth visiting, while the resort is also home to the amazing Terra Mitica theme park.
Costa del Sol - Another of Spain's most famous destinations is the Costa del Sol. This region is further south than the Costa Blanca and is renowned for its outstanding holiday resorts (such as Torremolinos), fantastic golf courses and beautiful beaches. For a break that combines sun and sea with a spot of culture, head to Malaga. This charming city has more than 2,000 years of history and is home to some fascinating monuments, including Gibralfaro Castle and the Alcazaba.
Barcelona - Of course, holidays in Spain don't have to be about the beach, as the country is home to so many wonderful cities, of which Barcelona is just one. This is an excellent destination for those who love city breaks, with world-class museums (such as the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art), famous landmarks (like the Sagrada Familia), fantastic shopping opportunities and brilliant restaurants among Barcelona's attractions.
Costa de la Luz - This section of coastline is an excellent choice for wildlife lovers, as the estuaries that meet the sea have created vast wetlands that are home to a wide range of bird species. Cadiz is the main city here and the region stretches all the way down to the Strait of Gibraltar. While staying in the area, you can easily visit Gibraltar, or you can even fly into the British territory and take your holiday from there. Among its most famous sights are Europa Point - where the Atlantic meets the Med - the siege tunnels and the Moorish castle.
Things to do in Spain
Aside from the countless sightseeing opportunities a holiday to Spain offers, there are many other reasons to travel to the nation on a getaway. If you base yourself in one of the coastal resorts, you can try a wide variety of water sports such as water skiing, windsurfing, scuba diving, kite surfing and sailing, while on dry land certain regions of Spain (especially in the south) are renowned for their outstanding golf courses. There are also fantastic hiking and cycling trails that crisscross the country, so if you're looking for an active break in the sunshine there are few better European destinations to choose from.
