We went for a holiday and ended up buying a house 4 years ago... still love it and still finding new places to explore every visit.

For true Spain turn right out of airport and head for Mojacarits got it all!

Spectacular views mountains and seaexcellent beachesgreat golf, plus lots of moorish history.

Ideal for families or couples Mojacar is an up and coming resort well worth a visitprices still reasonableyet to catch up with the rest of spainbut that is its charm.

we would recommend you hire a car again very reasonable! To explore this wonderful region to get the best out of the area.

Hire a car and do some sight seeing the market at Cuevas del Almanzora is a small local market with a very good museum and art gallery in the adjoining castle.

The area of Mojacar Garrucha and Vera Playa are well worth a visit. Less than an hours drive north from Almeria airport you will find an unspoilt area of Spain with fabulous beaches including the biggest and most easily accessible naturist beach in Europe. Good hotels hostals and high quality apartments are available and other than in high season you could arrive on spec and find accommodation to your taste and budget.

There is a wide selection of restaurants and bars we particularly like the Rincon in Garrucha for superb seafood El Balconcita on Vera Playa for wonderful home made tapas. Vera and Garrucha are busy bustling Spanish towns with a refreshing lack of brit bars. Mojaccar is divided into 2 areas the old town or pueblo and the Playa. Both are still mainly Spanish but there is a good mix of tourists from Northern Europe with a wide range of eating establshments for every taste.

Great for couples and families alike. May not be the best place for stag or hen weekends as the nightlife is more laid back and cultured.

We stayed in the resort of Roquetas de Mar. The whole resort is fantastic. The people are really friendly and their is still a lot of Spanish holiday and live there. The tapas bars are of the od tradition whereby the tapas is free with drinks. There are superb bars on the beachfront and the restaurants and tapas bars in the port are fantastic.

We visited lots of bars and restaurants and a few of our favourites are Beckets in the Plaza Dambor de Hora Alpujjara to name but a few. - Tracie Hall

The jewel in the crown I suppose for women is the Centro Commercial where you can shop till you drop. Next to and part of this shopping centre is the biggest and best supermarket I have ever seen.

Almeria is the capital city of Almeria province and has lots of attractions. A large port where cruise liners berth and a wonderful old City full of beautiful ancient buildings. It has 51 checkouts and you could spend a whole day in there. You could not ask for the wrong thing. Upstairs in the shopping centre is a range of eateries where you can sample foods and snacks from all around the world including Mc'Donalds!!

Away from the city itself is some of the must stunning open countryside in Spain this part of the country being the only true desert in Europe but if you take the time to seek out a bit of green you will find ideal places for a picnic. - Keith Shelton

We recently purchased a property in Almerimar Almeria as we were so enamoured with the area. It's a great place to totally chill out!...it's the nearest thing to a Caribbean beach without being in the Caribbean.

We recently purchased a property in Almerimar Almeria as we were so enamoured with the area. It's a great place to totally chill out! On our recent trip over we visited a lovely little place along the coast called Agua Amarga - it's the nearest thing to a Caribbean beach without being in the Caribbean. A beautiful cove with beautiful beach and scenery definitely a must on your day trip list. - Jeanne Spence

I have been visiting Almeria for quite a number of years and have now bought a holiday apartment there. I love the area it is mainly a Spanish holiday resort and the entertainment there is not for the Malaga or Benidorm lovers.

There is plenty to do but hiring a car is really a must. A visit to the Tourist information office in the centre of Almeria will furnish you with information about the numerous villages to visit, dates of fiestas and festival and places of interest both in and around Almeria city.

There is go-carting and a water park down in Roquetas (about 30 mins away), the Oasys Mini Holiwood theme park is well worth a visit. This offers cowboy shows cancan dancing cactus gardens a large swimming pool (very welcome break in the heat of the day) and a Zoo. It is a full day out at a very reasonable cost and is in Tabernasonly 20 mins from Almeria.

The bars and restaurants are typically Spanish and there are some excellent Tapas Bars giving true value for money. You can also visit Mojacar Sorbas with its caves Vera Carboneras and lots of other places. Granada is One and three quarter hours by car and here there are many attractions including the famous Alhambra Palace.

You can sit and soak up the sun or get out and about. There a many golf courses and at El Toyo (10 mins from Almeria airport) is the brand new Alboran Golf course which was designed and built for the Mediterranean Games (equivalent to our Commonwealth Games). As it is not privately owned it offers rounds of golf at very reasonable prices. - Mavis Cameron

Dear Sirs, I wAnted to tell you what a wonderful time I had at one of your hotels! I went to Almeria staying at Roqutas-Dr Mar in the Hotel Neptuno.

My flight arrived after the dining room was closed, but they had laid on a beautifull meal for me with dessert drink and fruit included. This was very welcome after my journey. The rooms were spotless with all the added extras. Just the little things like shampoo, shower gel, hair drier, soap, sponge and beautiful white towels! All adds to the welcome especially after a late flight.

The reception staff were more than helpful, as I was travelling alone they gave me lots of information about the local area, trips and things to do etc... The food in the restaurant was very good, plenty of choice. I found the area as a whole very nice, quite different to the Costas. It would appear that a lot of the Spanish people go there for their holidays. I can see why! Once again may I reasure you that this hotel is well worth the 4* rating your company has given it. I could go on but suffice to say it was a very good holiday. Thank you - Susan Green

We bought a 3 bedroomed apartment in Almerimar 5 years ago and it has been the best thing we ever did.

We visit for about 12 weeks a year throughout the year and have never been there yet when the sun hasnt been evident for at least part of the day. Almerimar is a beautifully manicured purpose built resort with a superb marina and a 27 hole golf course running through. It has 13km of beaches and a mass of well maintained open spaces. It is like an oasis! Almerimar has superb road links and it is only a 20 minute drive into the Los Alpuharras Mountains or the Sierra Nevadas where it is like stepping back in time. There you will see old men in the village squares weaving baskets and farmers hauling produce on their mules. Almeria is very Spanish and a world away from the UK with sun mentality of Torremolinos and Benidorm. They say that Almerimar is Spain's best kept secret and it is but it wont be for long. - John Furse

Also visit the lovely fishing town of Garruchaa, it is a must for all you fish lovers with restaurants on the sea front. - Paul West

The area is fantastic and has everything we could ever want and more...

Seven years ago my wife and I intended to drive through Andalucia in our camper van on our way to visit a friend in Marbella. We could not contact him by phone so a booked one night stay in Mojacar campsite. It ended up being 6 weeks and we spent another 12 weeks in the same place in the next 2 years. We ended up buying a plot of land in a small mountain village 25 miles inland from Mojacar and still cannot believe that retirement could possibly be as good as this. and we are only 50 miles from Monarch Airlines and Almeria airport. - Frank Clements

This place is the jewel in the crown of Spain! Not your typical British holiday, Almeria is stunningly breathtaking with fantastic scenery.

Beautiful safe beaches, playful sandy coves but most importantly it retains the relaxed atmosphere that is traditional Spain. We have now bought in San Juan de los Terreros and would be more than happy to never see built up areas of Spain again!! - Nicki Lee

We have been visiting Requetas for 8 years and love the atmosphere.

We have a share in an appartment now. The oasis bar/resturant and beach bar are excellent - Loly and Renaldo are very friendly. Also, head towards Marc`s bar for 2for1 and the best chip butty anywhere. For an English bar go to Happy Days as Bob and Carol make you very welcome with 2for 1 on drinks too. The weather is good all year round. - MRS SR TIPTON

We last went to Mojacar in Almeria in February this year and have been going there for 30yrs once or twice a year.

We think of it as the last unspoilt part of Spain. It has a very long beach and the white village is perched on a mountain. There is always plenty to do - Golf, Horse riding, Water Park, Air trips, Water sking, Diving and Walking. It has a good bus service every half hour to the surrounding villages and small towns and a daily service to Almeria. We took our daughter, son in law and grand children the first time in 1997 and now the parents have bought two apartments and are going to live there soon as they like it so much. - Barbara Duncombe

We have been all around Spain and loved the area of Puerto Rey. We bought an apartment there 4 years ago in the mainly Spanish area in fact we have Spanish neighbours. We aim to get out there around 4 times a year and intend to move out there permanently as soon as we can.

We love Almeria and the slow pace of life as well as the beautiful scenery around the area. We have many friends who have also moved out there to live after visiting it on a holiday. The ease for us using Luton airport and flying to Almeria means we have only a very short drives both ends which is ideal. - Diana Beckett

We have been going to this part of spain for the last 5 years. We love it so much that we now have a wonderful apartment near Los Gallardos.

Unfortunarely we have learnt recently that Monarch no longer intends to fly there from Luton. So when we go again in september it will be our last trip to Almeria airport. We hope that the slots made available by Monarch are taken up by another carrier as we absolutely love Almeria airport and against the two and a quarter hour drive from Alicante thirty mins from Almeria is no contest. - Martin Neale

We live in a small village called Galera about 1.75 hours drive from Almeria Airport. We live in a casa cueva which is a cave with additional rooms built on the front.

In the summer the cave is very cool and welcoming and in the winter is warm without heating. The village is steeped in history and allegedly discovered the first European human remains. It also has its own museum in which a mummy is on display that is over 2000 years old. Try a cave house - its accommodation with a difference... - Karen Jones
