The Spanish city of Alicante has long been a popular destination for Britons on their holidays. As the gateway to the Costa Blanca, its skyline is dominated by the looming Mount Benacantil, which provides an imposing backdrop to any beach holiday. With plenty of 2013 flights still available, why not visit Alicante this year?
Alicante has traditionally been seen as an ideal holiday resort, mixing sun, sea and great beaches. To stay here is to enjoy a fantastic beach holiday with a truly Spanish feel. There’s a lot to see and do, including a trip to the castle of Santa Bábara at the summit of the mountain. As a relic of the many conflicts fought in the region, and a symbol of the city’s historical past, it’s well worth a visit.
Alicante is also famous for its great nightlife, meaning that you can enjoy the sun all day and the city all night! There are several big festivals that you don’t want to miss, including the Hogueras de San Juan, or the Bonfires of Saint John. Celebrated across Spain around the eve of St John’s Day, the largest celebrations take place in Alicante from 19-24 June. Celebrations of local traditions, food, sports events, and huge bonfires and fireworks displays make for an incredible few days.
Alicante is part of the autonomous region of Valencia, one of several that make up greater Spain. Each region is very different, with individual customs, traditions and food. One of Spain’s most famous signature dishes, paella, is thought to have originated in Valencia, the region’s capital. If you have time, why not take a day trip to Valencia to try it for yourself?
