Costa del Sol
Malaga is the capital of the Costa del Sol and it's also where you fly into if you book a holiday to this part of Spain. Flights to Malaga from London take around 2 hours and 45 minutes, so it's easy to reach if you're in need of some sunshine by the sea.
There are many fantastic resorts in the Costa del Sol that you can easily reach from Malaga, among them Torremolinos, Marbella and Nerja. All of these destinations have wonderful beaches, but the striking coastline is not the only reason why thousands of holidaymakers flock to this part of Spain every year.
You'll find all manner of attractions in the region, with something to cater for everyone from toddlers to sophisticated grown-ups. Top family resorts include Torremolinos and Benalmadena, with the latter home to the Tivoli World amusement park, a Sea Life Centre and Paloma Park - a vast green space with a kids' playground and lots of bird life.
Another fascinating destination you can reach from Malaga is Gibraltar - a British overseas territory that's home to some amazing sights. The Rock of Gibraltar is just one of these and it's where you'll find some of its best known attractions - the great siege tunnels, the Moorish castle, St Michael's Cave and Gibraltar's Barbary macaque monkeys.
Malaga's top attractions
While the rest of the resorts in the Costa del Sol might tempt you, don't dismiss Malaga as a holiday destination, because the city has a lot to offer. It's got plenty of history and culture, as well as outstanding beaches and stunning nature reserves close by. The following are some of the attractions in Malaga:
Museo Picasso Malaga
Pablo Picasso was born in Malaga (you can also visit his first home while you're here) and the museum dedicated to his work is home to over 200 pieces by the famous artist. These feature a range of techniques and materials that he utilised throughout his lifetime.
Alcazaba and Gibralfaro Castle
These two landmarks are linked, with the former what remains of an old Arab fortress and the latter a castle constructed in the 14th century. As well as the forts themselves, you can also explore their respective museums - in the Alcazaba is the Archaeological Museum that houses exhibits relating to the Phoenician and Roman empires, while the Gibralfaro Castle features installations about the building's history and how it was used.
Plaza de la Merced
This bustling square in Malaga's historic quarter is where you'll find Picasso's birthplace, as well as a monument to General Torrijos. When Picasso was growing up, many artists, architects and other creative types lived in houses surrounding the plaza.
Day trips from Malaga
If you're keen to explore other parts of the Costa del Sol during your getaway, you'll be well placed to do so from Malaga. There are many nearby towns you can visit, but we've singled out some of the natural attractions close to the city.
Los Alcornocales Natural Park
This large reserve, which is located between Malaga and Cadiz, is a fantastic place for walking, with the biggest cork oak forest in the world, as well as rivers, valleys and hills just waiting to be explored. Vultures, golden eagles and peregrine falcons all inhabit the area, as do otters, wild boars and mongooses, so keep your eyes open for the local wildlife as you stroll.
Montes de Malaga
To the north of the city is Montes de Malaga, a natural park in the mountains where you will find wonderful walks, as well as outstanding restaurants that serve up local specialities like cured meats and wines from nearby vineyards.
