Spain (Mainland): Introduction

When you start looking for flights to Spain you'll realise that there are dozens of appealing destinations located within this south European country. From its stunning coastal regions like the Costa del Sol and Costa Blanca to its vibrant cities, such as Barcelona and Madrid, there really is something for everyone.

Most flights to Spain take between two and three hours, making it a manageable distance to travel for a long weekend if you don't have the luxury of taking an entire week off work. You'll discover the majority of Spain's airports are served by excellent transport links, so getting from the plane to your final destination should never be too tricky. If you're keen to book cheap flights to Spain, check out the deals available through Monarch Flights.

Where to fly to in Spain

Where you need to fly to in Spain will depend on what kind of holiday you would like. We've put together a list of some of the most popular destinations in the country and which airports serve them:

• Costa del Sol - Malaga is considered to be the gateway to the Costa del Sol and its airport provides a link to the likes of Torremolinos, Benalmadena, Nerja, Marbella and Fuengirola, to name just a few of the region's popular resorts - not to mention the city of Malaga itself. The average flight time from London is two hours and 40 minutes.

• Costa Blanca - Alicante is where you'll fly to if you want to visit one of Spain's other top coastal regions - the Costa Blanca. As well as Alicante, the main resorts located here include Benidorm, Elche, Javea and Calpe, all of which are easily accessible from this main aviation hub. From London, the average flight time to Alicante is around two hours and 15 minutes.

• Barcelona - Barcelona is one of Spain's most popular city break destinations because there is just so much on offer here, from amazing cultural, artistic and historical attractions to its fabulous urban beaches. What's more, flights from London to Barcelona typically take around two hours.

• Costa de Almeria - Costa de Almeria is one of Spain's quieter, untouched coastal regions that's home to some areas of outstanding natural beauty, such as the Cape Gata Biosphere Reserve. Fly into Almeria, from where you can discover stunning landscapes and peaceful towns, such as Mojacar. Flights to Almeria from London take approximately two hours and 45 minutes.

• Gibraltar - Gibraltar is an unusual tourist destination that's actually a British overseas territory, rather than part of Spain. It's home to a range of fascinating historical sites, as well as some amazing wildlife. Monarch Flights operates a service from Manchester to Gibraltar, with the journey lasting just under three hours.

Plan your perfect Spanish getaway

There's more to arranging a holiday than just finding cheap flights to Spain, as you also need to think about your accommodation and what you'd like to see and do once you arrive. If you have yet to choose a destination for your trip, think carefully about what you'd like to focus on before you make a booking.

For instance, if you're after some sunshine then one of the resorts on the Costa del Sol or Costa Blanca will tick the right boxes, with these regions also great if you're keen to get active on holiday. Should art, culture and history be more up your street, Barcelona or Gibraltar may be a more appropriate choice, as they each boast dozens of attractions and landmarks to keep travellers happy.
