...had a good 7 nights in barca. Check out Bar Dostrece to the east of La Ramblas but do not head to far off the Tourist track because if you do you come to the Ravel area which is very very seedy with a lot of drug users (heroin addicts?) hanging about and there was a handbag snatched just as we turned to get out of the area. If you have time go to park areas of not only park Guell but take the tram to (place i forget the name of in the north where there is an Amusement park - Tibidado?). With more time available avoid the crowds a bit by getting the National Railway to Sitges for the day. There you will find good restaurants and a relaxed atmosphere. Barca is better at a relaxed pace rather than the usual weekend sprint.

Although Barcelona is a wonderful place to visit it has also been described as the pickpocket centre of Europe.
This not only applies to wallets and purses but also bags you carry (even over the shoulder). Most notorious areas are The Ramblas and Plaza Cataluna where the buses arrive from the airport and the sightseeing buses leave from.
Beware of the living statues on the Ramblas. One of a gang of thieves may drop a coin. You think youve dropped it bend down and your wallets gone to be passed from hand to hand by the thieves at the back of the crowd. Beware hesitating to study a map in Plaza Cataluna as you get off the airport bus. The thieves are waiting to grab your bag and dash off over a busy main road where youre unable to follow (It happened to me!)
Be equally wary on the Underground and keep an eye on your luggage on the airport bus itself. It may be whipped off at a stop before your destination. Better to get a taxi from the airport to your hotel. Don't let the thieves ruin your holiday in this fine city.

It is good advice to be aware of your bags etc. in tourist areas such as the Ramblas but don't be afraid to explore because you'll find a fantastic city away from the crowds.
The reviews of Barcelona that mention the security risks are to a point true, but the suggestion not to stray too far off the tourist track is funny because the truth is that the pickpockets hang out with the tourists!
To get a really good feeling for the city try an apartment instead of a hotel.

We loved the hustle and bustle of the Rambalas and if you take your eyes away from the market style stalls and view the buildings on each side the design and architecture is superb.
Barcelona is a wonderfully cosmopolitan place with the Rambalas being a fabulous place to visit. It is so easy to miss it as your eyes move across the stalls at ground level so you really do need to look upwards to view the buildings which carry so much history. We are looking forward to taking a 3 or 4 day break there as we only had one day as it was a port of call on our cruise.

I think Barcelona is a wonderful city. It's alive, fun and there is always something going on. You never feel bored there.
Wonderful sights, good restaurants (not that expensive) and friendly people. And the flights from Europe are very cheap. Go there for a holiday you'll not regret it. And for beach lovers too their beaches are all within train distance from Barcelona and Spain do have excellent connections at exceptional prices. - Lucia Marques

Hire a car and do some sight seeing the market at Cuevas del Almanzora is a small local market with a very good museum and art gallery in the adjoining castle.
The area of Mojacar Garrucha and Vera Playa are well worth a visit. Less than an hours drive north from Almeria airport you will find an unspoilt area of Spain with fabulous beaches including the biggest and most easily accessible naturist beach in Europe. Good hotels hostals and high quality apartments are available and other than in high season you could arrive on spec and find accommodation to your taste and budget.
There is a wide selection of restaurants and bars we particularly like the Rincon in Garrucha for superb seafood El Balconcita on Vera Playa for wonderful home made tapas. Vera and Garrucha are busy bustling Spanish towns with a refreshing lack of brit bars. Mojaccar is divided into 2 areas the old town or pueblo and the Playa. Both are still mainly Spanish but there is a good mix of tourists from Northern Europe with a wide range of eating establshments for every taste.

The jewel in the crown I suppose for women is the Centro Commercial where you can shop till you drop. Next to and part of this shopping centre is the biggest and best supermarket I have ever seen.
Almeria is the capital city of Almeria province and has lots of attractions. A large port where cruise liners berth and a wonderful old City full of beautiful ancient buildings. It has 51 checkouts and you could spend a whole day in there. You could not ask for the wrong thing. Upstairs in the shopping centre is a range of eateries where you can sample foods and snacks from all around the world including Mc'Donalds!!
Away from the city itself is some of the must stunning open countryside in Spain this part of the country being the only true desert in Europe but if you take the time to seek out a bit of green you will find ideal places for a picnic. - Keith Shelton

I have been visiting Almeria for quite a number of years and have now bought a holiday apartment there. I love the area it is mainly a Spanish holiday resort and the entertainment there is not for the Malaga or Benidorm lovers.
There is plenty to do but hiring a car is really a must. A visit to the Tourist information office in the centre of Almeria will furnish you with information about the numerous villages to visit, dates of fiestas and festival and places of interest both in and around Almeria city.
There is go-carting and a water park down in Roquetas (about 30 mins away), the Oasys Mini Holiwood theme park is well worth a visit. This offers cowboy shows cancan dancing cactus gardens a large swimming pool (very welcome break in the heat of the day) and a Zoo. It is a full day out at a very reasonable cost and is in Tabernasonly 20 mins from Almeria.
The bars and restaurants are typically Spanish and there are some excellent Tapas Bars giving true value for money. You can also visit Mojacar Sorbas with its caves Vera Carboneras and lots of other places. Granada is One and three quarter hours by car and here there are many attractions including the famous Alhambra Palace.
You can sit and soak up the sun or get out and about. There a many golf courses and at El Toyo (10 mins from Almeria airport) is the brand new Alboran Golf course which was designed and built for the Mediterranean Games (equivalent to our Commonwealth Games). As it is not privately owned it offers rounds of golf at very reasonable prices. - Mavis Cameron

Dear Sirs, I wAnted to tell you what a wonderful time I had at one of your hotels! I went to Almeria staying at Roqutas-Dr Mar in the Hotel Neptuno.
My flight arrived after the dining room was closed, but they had laid on a beautifull meal for me with dessert drink and fruit included. This was very welcome after my journey. The rooms were spotless with all the added extras. Just the little things like shampoo, shower gel, hair drier, soap, sponge and beautiful white towels! All adds to the welcome especially after a late flight.
The reception staff were more than helpful, as I was travelling alone they gave me lots of information about the local area, trips and things to do etc... The food in the restaurant was very good, plenty of choice. I found the area as a whole very nice, quite different to the Costas. It would appear that a lot of the Spanish people go there for their holidays. I can see why! Once again may I reasure you that this hotel is well worth the 4* rating your company has given it. I could go on but suffice to say it was a very good holiday. Thank you - Susan Green

We bought a 3 bedroomed apartment in Almerimar 5 years ago and it has been the best thing we ever did.
We visit for about 12 weeks a year throughout the year and have never been there yet when the sun hasnt been evident for at least part of the day. Almerimar is a beautifully manicured purpose built resort with a superb marina and a 27 hole golf course running through. It has 13km of beaches and a mass of well maintained open spaces. It is like an oasis! Almerimar has superb road links and it is only a 20 minute drive into the Los Alpuharras Mountains or the Sierra Nevadas where it is like stepping back in time. There you will see old men in the village squares weaving baskets and farmers hauling produce on their mules. Almeria is very Spanish and a world away from the UK with sun mentality of Torremolinos and Benidorm. For tapas you can't beat the Baseta Bar on Calle Azorin.
The menu of the day at El Jardin is well worth a try and if you are looking for somewhere to sleep for the night you should go to Hotel Caseta Nova between Castalla and Ibi. It is an old Finca which has been well restored with comfortable rooms and a good restaurant.

Just to say 10 years ago when we purchased a property in Alicante we had three scheduled choices. We used Monarch then more choices came along only living one mile from Heathrow it made sense to use the airport, that choice has now gone for the winter period so we went back to our original choice Monarch at London Gatwick.
And it was a real pleasure to actually know what was going on at the front of the aircraft, the pilot and co pilot kept us all informed where we were and what was going on and what to expect weather wise when we landed at London Gatwick, not the norm these days so well done Monarch.
We will be back

I travelled with my Mother and 3 year old Son to Alicante and stopped at the Hotel Porto Calpe in Calpe.
It is 2* and some would say basic - but hey - what do you want from a room?! The rooms are cleaned thoroughly each day, bed linen changed and towels replaced. There is always hot water. You can go self catering/room only or B&B. The breakfast is a buffet style continental breakfast and if you really want a full English there is a cafe next door associated with the Hotel. The staff are incredibly friendly. It's a small family run hotel and the owners pride themselves on giving a personal service. The beach is literally around the corner (about 50m) and the port is right next to it. There is easy access to the Penon Difach and Benidorm is a short bus or train ride away. Although in Winter there isn't much to do in the Summer Calpe comes alive both with tourists and Spanish nationals who want to just get away from it all. I'd recommend Calpe to families and older people and in particular the Hotel Porto Calpe. - Laura Moses

When visiting the Alicante region a great place to base yourself is Denia the capital of the Marina Alta area. The town is dominated by a Moorish castle built on a hilltop above the port and is steeped in history. Today Denia is the gateway to Ibiza and the Balearic islands of Mallorca and Minorca.
The fast ferry service will take you to Ibiza in around two hours. There is always something happening in Denia which is reputed to have the largest number of fiestas anywhere in Europe. Many other attractions are only a short car journey away such as Terra Mitica Aqualandia and the Science museum and Sea World in Valencia. The best way to get around is to hire a car. Do this online before coming to Spain and you will find the prices surprisingly cheap (from 100 euros per week out of season). A great place to stay is Hostal Loreto in Denia. This is a medium sized family run hotel with all mod cons and a busy restaurant right in the centre of Denia (yet only a short walk from some beautiful beaches). The Flights and car Hire went without hitch and Faro airport was a doddle to find your way around.
We stayed at the Porta Nova Hotel in Tavira which suits us because the Hotel is only 6 minutes walk from the centre and Tavira is an authentic Portugese town. The Hotel was 4 star as far as the bedroom (Pool View) was concerned, but 3 star for the Food/Gym/Indoor Pool...etc. were cocerned. The Vila Galle where we stayed last year was a true 4 star Hotel.
There are 3 restaurants I would recommend:
- The O Pateo on the East Bank near the Roman Bridge for authentic dishes with larger than average portions.
- The Alquimia on the East Bank of the River Galio on the Rua Julio Vaz Corte Real is a gem of a place with specialities such as Tagine (Eartenware Pot with a pointed lid) of Lamb or Tuna or Prawns...etc. with a Morrocan influence. We also had the Sea Bass on a Roof Tile stuffed with prawns walnuts and Cous Cous adequately spiced. The staff were keen to explain the dishes in fluent English. Prices ranged from 20 Euros to 30 Euros for 2 people plus a litre of very good house red at 10 euros.
- The A Ver Tavira Restaurant was the most expensive, but is as equally charming as the other 2. The Restaurant has an imposing position above the river on the West Bank next to the castle. The menu ranges from steaks and some authentic Portugese dishes such as Turbot with Rice and King Prawns 15 Euros to Veal steaks...etc. We enjoyed Tavira, but take some warm cloths for the night-time. - David Holland

I am currently training at Flight Training Europe (Jerez Airport) for my ATPL Flying Licence. Jerez is a great city break destination from my own and other students experiences with relatives visiting I can recommend the Hotel Tryp Jerez for its reasonable prices and convenient location in a city centre square with a taxi rank near the main entrance.
Hotel Jerez and Hotel Sherry Park which are slightly more upmarket also get good reviews. For budget travellers Hotel Nova Centre is in a very good location with rooms from just 40 euros per night. In the city centre I can recommend El Almacen restaurant just off Plaza de Arenal for tapas in a traditional setting and La Piedra near Hipercor supermarket is a good restaurant in the evening (popular with the locals) where you cook meat on a hot plate at the table.
Jerez is great for access to Seville (hourly trains - journey time 1hr) and Cordoba (2hrs) and nearby Arcos de la Frontera (just 30mins away) is a must see spectacular white Andalucian village built along a ridge in the hills. El Puerto (25mins south) is a great place to eat lunch - I can recommend the fish restaurants near the centre or Puerto Sherry beach where there are a few small restaurants with tables outside overlooking the bay of Cadiz (you follow the road beyond the marina).
Cadiz is an interesting city for a day visit (although tricky to park) about 40mins from Jerez with a decent beach though the best beaches are about 30mins further south near Conil de la Frontera. When in Jerez popular attractions are the sherry bodega tours and the white horse shows - all details can be found in the hotels. Thanks - Michael Wigdahl

This area is on the Costa de la Luz - the coast of lights. A beautiful unspoilt area of Spain.
Jerez is mostly famous for it's sherry and brandy. You can find all the famous names here - Gonzalez-Byass Domecq and Sandermans. Most of the bodegas have tours and it is a must to go. After the tour of the bodega you can see a display of the dancing horses which Spain is famous for. The Andalucian thoroughbreds are trained to perform high precision ballet 'dances' to music.
Cadiz is only 20 mins away. It is one of the oldest city's in Europe. Columbus also sailed from here to the Americas. It is a bustling city with a combination of old and new - the new having the up market shops but a stroll round the old city (which will take about an hour) with it's narrow cobbled streets you get the real feel of Spain. The beaches are very clean with golden sand stretching for miles (much better than the med).
Nearby is also the Donana Natural Park which is a feeding ground for many birds and you may also catch sight of a Lynx.
There is much to do and see in this beautiful area of Spain and if you hire a car (the roads are very good) you can take a drive to the many white villages nearby.
Also look out for the storks that make their nests on top of many buildings. - Jackie

We have travelled many many places in over 40 years and we wanted to visit somewhere we had never before been. Jerez had just opened up as a destination with Monarch Airlines and we thought we would go for a special weekend break.
It was wonderful, the airport so near to the city centre made arriving and leaving easier than other places. The people were lovely too - the atmosphere was like Britain in the 50s well dressed families going quietly about their daily lives could be seen on every street - not a larger lout to be seen.
Plenty of restaurants and shops to choose from (don't expect 5 star treatment from the one 5 star hotel there - Hotel Jerez - because it's not), instead try the 4 star hotel near by. Ask before you book if there is any horse festivals on - if so go to it - they are great gala type days - we didn't actually see the horses but we soaked up the festival atmosphere in the grounds There was no fee payable - just walk in and enjoy. Everyone gets dressed up in their Sunday best on the Sabbath day and shops mainly close. You will feel underdressed on Sunday if wearing shorts in town. Remember to cover your bare arms up when visiting churches etc. You will feel welcomed where ever you go in Jerez. Remember to sample the wonderful sherry of course. - Ken Edwards

One thing that almost all tourists to the area overlook these days however are the white villages just off the coast that offer a true taste of what Spanish life is like.
Malaga The Costa Del Sol or more likely the tourist hotspots of Benalmadena Fuengirola or Marbella: The Costa Del Sol has become in the last decade the UKs favourite holiday destination thanks to its year round sun and cheap prices coupled with British Friendly locals and a myriad of tourist attractions.
Just a 20 minute drive from the coast you have towns such as Benehavis Ojen Alhaurin and Monda. These villages are like time capsules going back to the early 20th century when life was simple and carefree where farmers still herd their goats through the villages in search of greener pastures and lunch can be had in any one of many tapas bars for just a few euros. The more adventurous among you can pick up a leg of the famous serrano ham or a few bottles of fresh olive oil or enough locally made garlic to last until your next trip for little more than the cost of a full english breakfast on the coast and more importantly you will be buying memories of your trip that are un-comparable to the typical photo on a plate that blights the coastal tourist spots.
Any tourist can go to the nightclubs and beachbars dotted around the coast but for a true holiday experience nothing compares to seeing how the locals really lived before the costa del sol became the costa del expat!

We all had an excellent weekend away with great weather. As girls abroad we did not at any time feel unsafe and all the locals were friendly.
We arrived after a great flight with Monarch into Malaga from Gatwick about 7pm and caught the local bus for £2 euros to Marbella and then a taxi for 10euros into Puerto Banus dropped off our bags and went for a curry in the harbour. I cannot recommend Puerto Banus enough for a up-market weekend away. There is a lovely harbour excellent restaurants (some rather pricey) and clean golden sanded beaches.
Yes there are lots of so-called Millionaires in posh expensive cars and yachts but if you can see through the arrogance it is a lovely place to stay.
Would definately revisit and travel with Monarch again.

If lying on the beach 24/7 gets a little tedious try exploring along the coast East of Malaga.
Yes! East not West. less than an hour from Malaga is the wonderful scenery and beaches of the Costa Tropical stretching from Nerja to Almunecar. Both Nerja and Almunecar have much to offer Nerja with its numerous bars and nightlife combined with the enchanting underground caves nearby is well worth the visit.
If its shopping your after then make sure you visit on one of the market days when you will find bagains galore. If you want to get away from the tourist trap then travel about 15kilometers further East to La Herradura. La Herradura lies twixt Nerja and Almunecar the name itself means Horseshoe and in this small Spanish seaside town you will discover why it remains one of the Costa little secrets.
The beach road is scattered with cafes and bars where local and visiting Spanish sit for much of the day drinking the local wine and nibbling on the complimentary tapas. Yup every time you buy a drink out comes the tapas and very morish it is too in fact you will not want to each lunch after tasting the various tapas that are served to you.
If your taste buds are stuck on British type food then visit the Hideaway cafe bar between the childrens playground and the market place. Here you can still buy a beer for around £1 and sit on the terrace until early evening watching the red/orange sun disappear on the seas horizon.
Bars stay open until the early hours (in fact the local Spanish dont emerge until around 9pm) and if your a really late owl then you must visit the local live music nightspot (weekends only) called La Cochera. This is an experience not to be missed and if you didnt salsa or boogie before you arrived at La Herradura you will be able to by 5am which is when the music stops and everyone meanders home to their spanish hideaways.
The scenery around La Herradura is breathtaking there are a number of protected parks and naturist beaches so whatever your preference you will find something to delight you! Unfortunately there are not many hotels (well only one actually) in La Herradura though there are a number of hostel style accommodation available. So if your thinking of staying overnight you need to book well in advance. Otherwise make sure your driver doesn't over indulge on the local vino and your still only about 1 hours drive back to Malaga.
Hasta la Viva La Herradura.

Forget jumping on the train bus or transfer coach down to a soulless beach resort on the costa del hell.
It wasnt given that nickname for no reason. Instead taste a bit of real spanish life by staying in Malaga city itself. Not only is it crammed with the most fantastic variety of bars restaurants and nightlife youve ever seen it is also home to one of spains most famous exports. No not San Miguel but Pablo Picasso. As well as visiting the birthplace of the famous artist you can view some of his greatest work in the magnificent Picasso Museum. But dont stop there. If you feel inspired by the exhibits there are a number of other fantastic museums dotted around the city centre many of them free to enter. Another local masterpiece dating back many years before Pablos rise to fame is the breathtaking cathedral. Take half an hour to stop by one of the adjacent cafes to admire the architecture over a coffee before popping inside for a guided tour.
I could go on for hours about all the wonderful things to do and see in Malaga especially in summer but take a trip their yourself and discover what I have many times over. You'll definitely want to go back for more.

...never flown with monarch before but i have to say they were briliant will definatley use them the next time we go away!!
recently visited playamar in toremolinoss our day started at 4 am when we left for the airport. never flown with monarch before but i have to say they were briliant will definatley use them the next time we go away!!
anyways after landing in malaga we went outside to get a couple of taxis be aware that these drivers dont speak much english at all ours didnt speak any so i made sure he saw the full address of where we were staying even so they managed to drop us off 3 streets away and not knowing the area we found this a little daunting. well after a little messing about we found our villa and i have to say from their on the holiday was brilliant the resort has everything a family could want in a holday. at least 5 miles of beaches to walk along plenty of shops bars resturants everything you could possibly want. a short bus ride can take you in to the town and a five min walk from their will take you into the water park. all the english bars are so friendly always willing to help an give out information and their food isnt bad for the price either. this is the first time we havent booked a package deal an we saved so much money this way. we have five children and booking with monarch and finding our own accomodation well it has made it so we can go abroad every year from now on brilliant ...........
THANKS MONARCH!!!!!!!!

escape from the crowds and take a drive along the coast away from the glitz and glamour of marbella and head to the little known costa tropical and the traditional white washed village of salobrena.
great unspoilt beaches spain as the spanish know it and rub shoulders with the locals on holiday and not your fellow brits. the costa tropical has a micro climate which offers great temperatures all year round but with the sierra nevadas and skiing only 50mins away.

If you like high-rise resorts and crowded beaches stay on the west side of Malaga. If you would like a change from that go in the other direction and head for Nerja.
Nerja has 7 beaches beautiful scenery and a relaxed atmosphere which you cannot find at other reorts along the costa.
In the old town there are a myriad of streets to explore where you can discover all sorts of shops bars and restaurants.
You will not find a beach like the Burriana backed with shops bars and restaurants and of course Sunday would not be Sunday without lunch at Ayos. You can tell the quality by the fact that a lot of the locals eat there. All the paella you can eat for €5.
The views from the Balcon de Europa are simply stunning looking back over the town to the nearby Sierra Almijara.
Sightseeing wise you have the caves Granada the Sierra Nevada Frigilliana and the Costa Tropical within easy driving distance.
Nerja is the complete resort.

Used Malaga Airport for 6 Holidays to Nerja over the last 7 years and Monarch several times. The Flights always on time and the Ground and Cabin Crew friendly and efficient...
Have also used Europa car hire and have always found them friendly and efficient TILL THIS YEAR... However they are now called Europa Goldcar... I waited over 2 hours to get the the desk to collect a prebooked car. Then waited a further 40 minutes to get the keys of a car which was not as booked dirty and scratched in a number of places...
I appreciate that Malaga airport is undergoing some major structural changes, but was not advised of any delays before arriving when prebooking. Please warn your readers to seriously consider using Europa Goldcar before pre-booking on their very use friendly Website... It does NOT reflect the level of service they receive at Malaga Airport.

If you fancy something different then jump on the cable car and go to the top of the mountains at the back of the resort from there you can see over to North Africa and Gibraltar.
I live in Benalmadena here on the Costa del sol. For a holiday it has a lot to offer. Apart from the sun sea sand and... there is a lot more going on. We have an amusement park called Tivoli World which opens mainly in the summer months then there is Selwo Marina where you can see penguins sea lions and the most amazing dolphin show.
We also have a very posh marina voted the best in the world for over 4 years just look at those yachts!!!.
Food wise it has to be fresh fish there is nothing quite like sitting in a chiringuito (beach bar/restaurant) eating freshly caught fish and sipping a tinto de verano (red wine and lemonade). There is somthing for everyone here hope to see you soon here on the Costa del sol.

I love the costa del sol Benalmadena is my favorite. This place has something for everyone.
Very large park with lake with all sorts in many animals roam free ducks chickens rabbits peacocks and it's free the kids love it. Also has cafes in there.
The beach is great the water is safe and walm. Next the marina, great looking at boats plenty of restaraunts and bars to visit. The kids will also like feeding the fish there.
There is Tivilli world in Arroyo this opens late and has shows and rides There is also a cable car an absolute must (unless you fear heights)at the top there is a bird show and also horses the market is also on here on Fridays.
If you are going without children and like a drink try the 24 hour square it is what it says. Try hopping on a bus or train to Fuengirola or Torremolinos about 1 euro. Fuengirola has plenty of bars and restaraunts for all pockets you can still get a pint for 1 euro the beach is great plenty of room for everyone. there is a huge shopping complex there (shoe heaven). There is also a huge market on here every Tuesday.
Torremolinos Has more noise in places, but not til late at night. Plenty of places to eat for everyone's pocket if you like fish you will love this place. There's calle San Miguel a street that winds from the top to bottom full of a range of little shops you end up on the beach. You can walk from there all the way back to Benalmadena. Also good for people who are less mobile as it is flat all the way along from Torremolinos to Benalmadena.
If the beach is not your thing visit Gibraltar 8.50 euros or Ronda seville Granada. Plenty to eat drink see and do. It's cheap to get there and the apartments are cheap. What else can I say go see for yourself you won't regret it and you will return. - M Lewis

Because of all the terminal improvement work going on leaving and arriving at the airport can be quite frustrating.
I would recommend the following:- If you intend to hire a car I would suggest that you leave the airport by taxi or public transport and hire locally. Leave yourself plenty of time when returning to the airport (if you are staying/living fairly near to a railway station the train is is the best public transport option for price and fewer delays). If you are being collected from the airport arrange to be picked up from outside the departure lounge (Top Floor). There is much less congestion and fewer police moving you on. - K. S. Knight

The staff were all friendly, helpful and always has a smile on their face. Aparthotel and sports complex will be on the site in the future, it is surrounded with golf courses, 5 minutes walk to the beach, half an hour drive to Gibralter and the best of it all are the good and helpful neighbours and the sunny weather. We visit Nerja east of Malaga at least twice or three times a year and never get fed up of the place.
Even though it is not a huge town there are still places we have not seen. If you like to people watch the Sierra Nevada is only a couple of hours drive from there. If you like to visit lovely beaches apart from the beautiful ones in Nerja La Herradura is only half an hour away.
If you go inland then Lake Viñuela is a true beauty spot. However I would like to mention Monarch airlines as I wish I had discovered them sooner we flew with them in June to Alicante and then in December to Nerja for the New Year and their service has prompted us to book our October holiday with them and our February holiday in 2008. The Mar Menor in the south east of Spain is a huge shallow inland sea of warm crystal clear water separated from the Mediterranean by a long narrow strip (The Sleeve) of silver sand beaches and handsome developements of hotels luxury apartments and villas. Every water sport is available with participants able to choose between the tranquility of the Mar Menor or just yards away the surf of the Mediterranean. Broad cycle paths wind around much of the shoreline weaving through the rich farming land where the only obstruction is an occassional herd of goats.
Principally a resort for Spanish holiday makers there are many restaurants ranging from the luxurious to small tapas bars sometimes tucked away and needing to be discovered others clustered around palm lined squares or overlooking the moorings of Marinas like Tomas Maestre towards the end of The Sleeve where a spectacular new lifting bridge tempts every one to get out their camera. Across the bridge and a few hundred metres on the right at the bottom of the Oasis building is a typical small Spanish restaurant that offers simple Spanish home cooking of incredible quality whose family staff display enormous patience and humour at customers stumbling efforts to manage the language.
The glamourous port and city of Cartagena is just thirty minutes away where several cruise liners can usually be seen bringing their passengers to visit the city and its festivals. The regions markets are fabulous with some featuring bread baked in the open and cooked meats prepared while you wait. Other stalls feature food ranging from the finest fresh vegetables to exotic fruits plus of course bargain clothing. Closer still are national parks where Lynx roam along wild shores and rugged landscape.
The La Manga Club with top class hotels and every sport facility is close by its fine golf course just one of many in the region. Several well equipped marinas are tucked in to corners of the Mar Menor and just across from The Sleeve a short drive away are several villages such as Alcazares boasting gorgeous beaches and immaculate promenades.
Several airports are within easy travelling distance the regional airport being just forty minutes away. With only one road in and out of the The Sleeve and with adequate but discreet police presence crime is virtually unknown and long after midnight people still stroll between the places of entertainment on their own or in family groups without a care.

Visit the famous guns placed on the top of a big hill just outside La Manga Club it takes about 50 mins to walk to the top and is a wonderful walk with wonderful views and wait till you get to the top, great. Visit Cartegena in September and watch the wonderful Roman spectacular which takes place all over the town, brilliant. Visit Cabo de Palos and see the fishing boats come in and buy wonderful fresh fish. If you like scuba diving then this will also be great. There are also loads of markets with great bargains. It takes just a 20 min drive from the local airport to get to La Manga, Playa Honda, La Manga Club, Cabo de Palos and Cartegena. Ive had a holiday home on the La Manga strip for 7 years and I love the area.
Everyone who has stayed there want to go back - it suits all ages. The beaches are great whether on the Mar Menor side or the Med and they never get too crowded. There are lovely walks and it's great for bird spotting. I've tried loads of restaurants and they've all been excellent. The shopping is good and there are loads of water activities including kite surfing, pedaloes, jetski hire and boat rides across the Mar Menor. Other activities include banana boats, golf, horse-riding, go-karting and small fun fairs with an indoor bowling alley and casino. There are historic towns and villages nearby. It's nothing at all like Benidorm or the usual big resorts but it does get busy during July and August when all the Spanish people holiday there and as theres only one dual carriageway the road is busy. I always avoid going there during July and August. I was there for the first week in March and the weather was good enough to go sunbathing on the beach every day. La Manga is only 20 mins from the airport in Murcia. - Lyn

We stayed at a house on the Las Rambas golf course not far from Torreveija last October which made us feel secure.
Villa Martin and Campomoar golf courses are in the vicinity too. There are many good restaurants and shops nearby and the coast is a short drive away. You can access this place from Murcia airport and the coastline of Costa Calida. It is also accessed from Alicante airport too on the E7 motor road. The holiday let was on the Owners Direct website and is on for a very good price all year round. - Maureen

The best beaches in Spain - yet empty. The best golf in Spain - yet empty. The best fish and chip shop - yet empty.
The destination is perfect for people who like us, want quiet and room to move. No funfair, no drunks and no loud music - heaven! - Lynne Pain

Having lived in the inland region of Murcia for 3 years now we know the area very well and can highly recommend it for holiday or living.
When we decided to move inland to real Spain from the coastal Costa Blanca it took us 6 months of very serious searching to find this beautiful region. It's become known as the hidden gem of Spain and if you visit then you will see why: stunning scenery, mountain views, nature parks, oldy worldy Spanish villages, hidden hamlets, traditional towns and cosmopolitan cities. - Elaine Ablett

We have a place in a little village called La Majada. It is very scenic and reasonably quiet!
It lies on the outskirts of Puerto de Mazarron. We boast a pub/restaurant and an emergency grocery shop. We love it!
Murcia Airport is 45 minutes away. - John Tucker

Do yourself a real favour visit the Costa Calida (Murcia) area. The people are friendly the sea is fantastic, especially the Mar Menor.
The prices are about 25% cheaper than the Costa del Sol. I have now been 7 times and will never go back to the tourist traps of Marbella, Majorca, Ibiza etc. This is the real Spain. - Olin

This year will be my 20th year holidaying in the port of Mazarron.
I was lucky enough to stumble on this hidden gem when searching for a Spanish holiday retreat for my then young family. With some of the best beaches in the area and a fabulous new port it is well worth a visit. Also worth a mention is the large Sunday market. Puerto de Mazarron gets very lively during the Spanish holiday season of July and August. - Colin Marlow
