Colombo: Introduction
Colombo began as a trading post, and it its time has been settled by Arabian Muslims, the Portuguese, and the English, becoming independent in 1948. As a result of this mixture of history, Colombo is a modern developed city, featuring striking historical buildings built in the different styles of each of its different rulers. Along with modern shopping malls and hotels, there are wonderful canals, and the elegant promenade of Galle Face Green, a popular place for tourists and locals to visit - featuring a beach area, food stalls, areas to walk, and is a wonderful oasis of calm within the city.
