This impressive natural site was originally used as a Buddhist monastery from 5th century BC, then a palace was built there, and then it returned to being a monastery until around the 14th century. Following a long period of abandonment, it was re-discovered in 1907 by a British explorer. Visiting the site, you climb the rock fortress and see the magnificent frescos, and look out over the complex and the remnants of the ancient garden complex. An impressive and inspiring site.

En route from Colombo to Kandy, Pinnawela is a 25 acre area of forest land which is home to an elephant sanctuary. Set up by the Sri Lankan goverment in 1975, it looks after young elephants that have been abandoned by their mothers, and also has a breeding program. The elephants are allowed to roam freely around the complex, and form herds as they would in the wild. A particular attraction is their bath in the river, which both the elephants and the onlookers enjoy!

This ancient royal city is incredibly impressive for its wealth of amazing archaeological treasures, some of which are still being excavated and re-discovered now. Two large Buddhist shrines were among the tallest buildings in the ancient world, and nearby is the world's oldest historically documented tree. A wonderful chance to explore and glimpse Sri Lanka's ancient elaborate history.

Nuwara Eliya, often called 'Little England', is well known for the stunning tea plantations blanketing the hills. The high altitude means the climate is milder than on the coast, which can be a welcome relief from the heat! Tea is one of Sri Lanka's main exports, and one of which they are very proud. The shoots are picked by hand before being processed, and extreme care is taken to maintain the high quality and reputation of the tea.
