More DealsAegean Coast (Bodrum): Introduction
Bodrum, located on the Turkish Aegean Coast, was once a sleepy fishing town, sitting in the shadow of the magnificent castle of St. Peter. Now, it is one of the most popular resorts in Turkey, with wide beaches and crystal clear waters providing the backdrop to a perfect beach getaway. With plenty of cheap flights available, Bodrum makes a great holiday destination.
Holidays to Bodrum normally focus around the beaches of picturesque resorts such as Paradise Bay in nearby Göltürkbükü. And for good reason – there are few better beaches in the Mediterranean. Here you can get involved with activities such as scuba diving or horse riding.
If you want to stretch your legs, there’s plenty to see away from the sand, and the region represents a fascinating blend of natural beauty and local culture. The Bodrum area has been inhabited for thousands of years, and these peoples have all left their marks on the surrounding landscape. The remnants of one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Mausoleum of Mausolus, are here, as well as the Theatre of Halicarnassus. There are also more modern architectural marvels, such as the castle, alongside several mosques.
If you’re given the chance, make sure you join in with some of the local festivals. These aren’t confined to the summer months, making Bodrum a great year-round destination. Highlights include the International Bodrum Carnival, usually held in September, which reflects the multicultural nature of the area. In October, Bodrum also hosts the Bodrum Cup Wooden Yacht Regatta, which sees traditional wooden boats from all over the world race in the harbour. 29 October is Turkey’s national holiday, Republic Day, which is marked by street parties and celebrations.
Monarch offer a range of Bodrum flights for 2013, with departures from Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds Bradford, London Gatwick and London Luton.
