Turquoise Coast (Dalaman): Introduction
Dalaman is the place to be on Turkey’s south-western coast and it’s no surprise really given the beautiful turquoise waters and year-round fantastic mediterranean weather. It has long been referred to as ‘The Turquoise Coast’, so if a beach holiday is what you’re looking for, it’s the ideal destination. Flights to Dalaman take around 4 hours from a London airport, or 4 hours 15 minutes from airports further north. You can book tickets with Monarch and take advantage of cheap flights to Dalaman or more flights to turkey.
Why choose Dalaman?
Dalaman really is one of those destinations that has it all, from its amazing coastline to its rich culture and history, there is something for everyone to enjoy, no matter what kind of holiday they prefer. Like many of the Turkish Mediterranean resorts, Dalaman and the surrounding areas of the Turquoise Coast are renowned for their glorious beaches. Resorts such as Marmaris and Olu Deniz combine high-end amenities and facilities with the region’s outstanding natural beauty and historic culture, to provide a great holiday environment, both in the day and again at night.
Dalaman really does not disappoint as its coast is made up of some of the best beaches, bays and coves you will ever visit - which make for some fun exploring. Patara beach is undoubtedly one of the region’s best and, stretching for nine miles, is the longest one in the Mediterranean. Take a trip to spend the day relaxing on the medium-grain, brown sand and you will feel as though you have been transported to another world as aside from the beautiful waters, the only other sight is the range of hills and ancient ruins.
Oludeniz is an hour or so away from Dalaman airport and is home to the world famous Blue Lagoon. The view is simply breathtaking as the crystal clear waters lap against the picturesque white beach, and the spot is so popular that part of the lagoon has now been turned into a national park. The fee to enter is minimal and well worth it for a day of exploration and relaxation. The Blue Lagoon is partially cut off from the rest of the Mediterranean, making it a very secluded place to visit and the waters are so clear that they are perfect to swim in or to take the children for a spot of snorkelling.
The mud baths which are situated in Dalyan are one of the most popular attractions in the Dalaman area and are a great experience. Relax with an all-over mud bath and then bask in the sun to let it dry. After, take a dip in the sulphur springs to clean yourself up and further drift into a state of complete tranquility. The best way to finish the day off is with a swim in the crystal clear waters and a spot of dinner.
If you prefer a slower pace to your holiday, one of the unique things to do in the Turquoise Coast region is to take a gulet cruise. Gulets are traditional, single-masted wooden ships, which allow you to cruise along the tranquil and idyllic coastline. Gulets come with their own crew to pilot the vessel and prepare all your meals too, so there’s no need to worry about that! Just go with the tide, dine on delicious local cuisine, and enjoy sunbathing on deck, or swimming in the crystal-clear waters of the peaceful bays in which the captain drops anchor.
Although the chances are that you won’t want to leave the Dalaman area as there is so much to see and do, if you do fancy exploring a bit more of Turkey then Bodrum is less than four hours away and well worth checking out. Bodrum is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Turkey with some wonderful beaches, beautiful views and a very fun, colourful night life. The marina and castle are well worth visiting and originally being a fishing village, you will sample some of the most delicious fish ever in Bodrum.
